Caddis Flies are a common by-catch
when using light traps to attract moths, yet they are, more often than
not, ignored or simply seen as nuisance and are discarded without any
attempt being made to identify or record them. Undoubtedly, one of the
main reasons for this widespread practice is the problem of
identification. Only about a third of adult caddis flies can be
identified on wing pattern alone.
Yet Caithness hosts a range of Caddis Flies with 74 species having
been recorded in the County. Caithness may be a stronghold for at least
one flagship species, Nemotaulius punctatolineatus.
The purpose of this section of the Moths of Caithness website is to
address this problem and to encourage moth observers to take a greater
interest in Caddis Flies. The aim is to provide a data base where
records for Caithness can be lodged so that species information and
distribution maps can be displayed and to provide a photographic
resource to aid identification.
This Caddis Flies section is in the very early stage of development but
it is hoped that over the next few years enough information will be
gathered to provide a meaningful picture of the status of, at least,
the commoner species in the County. There is a page for each
species with a map showing the distribution of records, a note of the
number of records recorded in the County and a photography were one is
available.
